Jean Charlot

I had the opportunity to visit the Jean Charlot Collection at the University of Hawaii . I highly recommend a visit if you're ever in Hawaii. It is a huge collection and always inspirational. Charlot was a french painter and illustrator who did it all when it came to exploring different techniques in his art. He also illustrated many childrens books. He spent a portion of his life in Mexico and participated in the founding of Mexican Muralism until settling in Hawaii teaching art at the universitiy. Being hispanic, I have much respect for his interest and knowledge of Hispanic and Indian cultures.

Of the favorite books to look at in the collection, it has to be a book called "Carmen" which he illustrated in the 1930's. The collection has some of the original sketches, original ink drawings, and progressive proofs from this book. Here's some photos.
