Roger Garcia is a self-taught illustrator, art preparator and educator based in Edmonton, Alberta on Treaty 6 Territory. Roger works in acrylics, gouache, ink, and digital media. His artistic practice is grounded in sharing family stories with themes of grief, resilience and healing.
Garcia has contributed to the Edmonton arts community for many years by facilitating drawing and painting workshops for children, youth, and adults. He has worked in schools, galleries, at community festivals and events, sharing his skills to foster creativity across generations.
Originally from El Salvador, Garcia came to Canada with his family in the 1980s as refugees fleeing civil war. His parents instilled in him the values of humility, remembrance of one’s roots, and service to others. These values have consistently informed his artistic and community-based initiatives. In 2011, his family received the Salvos Prelorentzos Peace Award in recognition of their contributions to peace and human rights.
From 2000 to 2008, Garcia organized Doctors and Derrières, an innovative fundraising event in support of emergency health initiatives in rural El Salvador, which benefited more than 3,000 people across 30 communities. His work has recently been published in Alberta Comics: Love by Renegade Arts Entertainment, La Nouvelle Plume, North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance, and recently exhibited at the Citadel Theatre. You can ride the Edmonton Transit LRT and experience his life size Salvadorian inspired mural.
