Roger Garcia is a self taught freelance cartoonist / illustrator based out of Edmonton who works in acrylics, watercolors and digital medium. His illustrations and cartoons have been published in various humour books, newspapers, and educational material.
When Roger is not at home drawing, he can be seen teaching his craft at various elementary schools and writing camps for teens. He has enjoyed facilitating cartooning and drawing workshops for a variety of age groups through WordsWorth Youth Writing Camp, The Bennett Centre, The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers, and the Harcourt House.
Aside from illustrating and teaching, Roger also organizes and participates in an annual event he founded seven years ago called “Doctors and Derrieres”. Medical students from the University of Alberta pose nude for local talented artists to draw and sculpt. The art pieces created are auctioned off, proceeds going to help an emergency health project in rural El Salvador. The funds raised from this event help over 1500 people in 30 poor communities.
Roger lives and works in a space for contemporary visual artists, writers, musicians, and filmmakers. Connecting and collaborating with many different artists in the Edmonton community.
His toy fox terrier, Pachin, is often lounging around while he is drawing and listening to music in his studio. Roger loves old, nostalgic music from the 1930's to 1950's. The quality of this music is a big source of inspiration for his artwork and connects him to memories of the past with his parents.
